Now living in Philadelphia, John can be found on the Schuylkill coaching masters and advising other coaches of all levels.  He also conducts clinics and camps all over the country.  When out of the coaching launch, he can be found enjoying his family Susan, Maddie, Duncan and Vivienne!

From 1985 to 1996 John competed on ten US National Teams. While on the US team John raced in eight World Championships, two Olympiads and in one Goodwill Games. During the 1996 Olympic trials an auto accident ended his hopes for a third Olympic Team. John competed in both sweeps and sculls during his career. In 1986 he was a member of the gold medal World Championship four without coxswain. For their efforts John's crew received the 1986 Vesper Award in athletic achievement. As a single sculler John has represented the U.S. in three World Championships. In 1996 John was inducted into US Rowing's Hall of Fame. In 1999 John was the first rower inducted into the University of Rhode Island's Athletic Hall of Fame.
